Amino acids are needed for most of the processes in the body, playing an integral role in our lives. Amino acids are often described as the building blocks of proteins, as they are important for their synthesis and overall body function.
Scientists have discovered more than 50 amino acids, 20 of which human body uses to make proteins. Some of the list of amino acids are made by the human body, so they are considered as non-essential amino acids, since we can synthesize them in our cells. Essential amino acids can not be produced by the human body. So we have to take them through a healthy diet.
Amino acids are important for basic metabolic function because they act as precursors (building blocks) for many other important chemicals that human body needs to survive. There is a list of foods high in amino acids.

A list of Essential amino acids:
- Histidine – participates in the production of red and white blood cells
- Arginine crosses the blood-brain barrier and stimulate the secretion of growth hormone by the pituitary gland
- Lysine – known for its ability to inhibit the reproduction and growth of Herpes simplex virus
- Methionine – assists the elimination of the lipids, which could form clots in the arteries. Furthermore, improves the condition of skin, hair and nails.
- Phenylalanine – precursor (predecessor) of the tyrosine. The two amino acids together are involved in the production of thyroid hormones
- Threonine is involved in the construction of many proteins, some of which are: tooth enamel, elastin, collagen.
- Tryptophan is necessary for the production of some B vitamins, in particular – of niacin, which is responsible for the formation of the brain neurotransmitter serotonin.
- Valine has stimulating properties for growth, muscle mass, tissue repair
- Isoleucine is concentrated in the muscle tissue. It is necessary for synthesis of hemoglobin and regulates the level of blood sugar.
- Leucine is also in the list of amino acids – it regulates protein synthesis

- glutamic acid
The list of amino acids can be find in many foods. The richest foods in amino acids are those that are high in protein – meat, fish, dairy products, legumes, etc.
